Ask anyone these days what is the most popular drink and they will shout “GIN”! There used to be only a hand full of gin distilleries making gins with names that would be in most homes. However since 2014 there has been an explosion of gin makers in the UK and around the world. There are now so many variations of taste, flavours and botanicals available it is hard to pick which one you like best.
One gin that has a difference is William Kerr’s Border Gin.
Back in 1837 the first distillery in the Borders Region of Scotland called The Borders Distillery was started. The gin is named after the Hawick native William Kerr (gardener at Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew and accomplished plant collector). This amazing gin is made with malted Borders barley and their own on site water which creates a unique and complex gin of juniper berries, herbs, roots, flours and spices from all over the world.
For the perfect G&T serve William Kerr’s Borders Gin in a glass over ice, a quality tonic and garnish with a slice of orange peel.
You can visit The Borders Distillery if you are in Hawick, Scotland. Tours are open Monday – Saturday, run every hour and cost £12.00. You can try the products, experience the industrial heritage and learn about the distilling process.

I love a gin with pink lemonade and strawberries
I love the ‘gin long drink’ they sell in Finland and Estonia, which I discovered last year on a twin centre holiday there. It’s a bit like Smirnoff Ice, but less sickly and with gin instead of vodka, and it’s amazingly refreshing on a hot day. When I was lamenting the fact that it’s not available over here, a Finnish friend asked me why I didn’t make my own with gin and grapefruit soft drink, until I told her that I’d never found grapefruit soft drink over here either.

My favourite way to drink gin is to drink it vicariously whilst watching dear friends of mine enjoy it instead. I don’t drink alcohol but I have a couple of friends who are rather partial to it.

I drink my gin the a twist of lime and slimline tonic water, but no ice!
I actually thought I hated gin for so many years (decades wasted) but found it’s tonic I dislike. So I prefer gin neat, either over ice, or better still chilled.
I am not a great fan of the tonic either. I like most of my spirits neat with ice anyway!!
Yes, those distilleries are everywhere, we have one just two miles away, I haven’t been yet. Hawick isn’t too far from me either so I must try their Gin.

I enjoy a gin nicely presented and not too strong. It’s something to be really appreciated and the decorative additions make it special. The subtleties of the various types are spoiled if too strong.
