Isle of Wight: Red Funnel Ferries Fleet Launch Red Jet 7

I recently made the day trip by train to the Isle of Wight to attend the launch of the new addition high speed Red Jet 7  to the Red Funnel Ferries fleet.

There are two way you can cross to the Isle of Wight with Red Funnel Ferries – by car ferry from Southampton to East Cowes (see my post when we took the dog) – and a traffic light away from the car ferry terminal is the foot passenger terminal.  From here you can get the super fast ferry – one of the Red Jets to West Cowes.

The newest addition to the Red Funnel fleet is the high speed Red Jet 7 which was named and launched by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall at a celebration in Cowes on a truly splendid, bright summer day.

The Duchess pressed the button to release the bottle of champagne, the bottle duly broke (it is considered bad luck if the bottle doesn’t break!) and red and white confetti exploded everywhere – quite the spectacle!

After The Duchess of Cornwall left to attend a VIP lunch a select group of press and media as well as some locals were treated to a short spin around the Solent showing the VIP’s some manoeuvres – boy that vessel can pick up speed!

Inside and on board the Red Jet 7 is comfortable, wheel chair friendly with little touches that make the journey more comfortable likeair conditioning system, leather seats, toilets, charging points, FREE high-speed Wi-Fi.

Here are some Red Jet facts:-

Red Funnel, originally Isle of White Ferry Company can trace its origins back to 1820 providing jobs and security to local people just as they do today.

Red Jet 7 was built nearby in East Cowes by the Wight Shipyard  Company by some 85 skilled Island craftsmen who have been employed during the build, including several apprentices.

The Red Jet 7 is the greenest Red Jet in the fleet – 4 tons lighter than Red Jet 6 which aids manoeuvrability, improves fuel consumption and further reduces emissions and wash. Red Jet 7, in contrast to Red Jet 3 which she replaces, meets tough engine emission standards and uses vinyl instead of paint to save weight and reduce the environmental impact from Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Unrivalled travel experience thanks to dynamic ride control, sophisticated dehumidifier & air conditioning system, leather seats, toilets, charging points, FREE high-speed Wi-Fi, LED lighting and a refreshment service. TV screens display the vessels GPS position, local & national news and real-time travel information for connecting services. All these features are now standard across the fleet.

I was a guest of Red Funnel however was not required to write a positive post.  All opinions and photographs are my own. No photographs may be reproduced in any form without my written permission.
