Czech Republic: 5 Awesome Places to Eat in Olomouc Post Pandemic

5 Awesome Places to Eat in Olomouc Post Pandemic

My trip this year to the Czech Republic was part of a conference with Traverse Events and was initially based in Brno.  As part of the after conference trip I spent 4 days in Olomouc, the countries 6th largest city.

This charming region may be small but the food scene is huge and growing by the day. From small restaurants to Michelin Chef Canteen style eating it is a foodie paradise.

Entree Restaurant:

One of the delicious meals we experienced in Olomouc, Czech Republic’s Central Moravia area.
@entreerestaurantolomouc serves you a 7 course degustation menu (with changes according to what’s in season) with wine pairings that will tickle all of your tastebuds! All of this in an open kitchen environment and the menu designed by chef Premek Forejt.

Each small plate of food (a taster) was a delight to the eyes, nose and mouth. Every course and every wine was explained with both knowledge and enthusiasm. The restaurant has been open for about 8 years and is like an edible theatre.

We tasted poppyseed oil over Moravian trout, duck breast rilled with buckwheat and scented with rose, shrimp/courgette/tomato with a tomyam curry paste and a lobster sauce, a Moroccan style chickpea dish with bulgar wheat, almonds and lentils. An onion with a fennel and dill garnish that had been in a 2% brine for 24 hours and served with a fennel & onion marinade and dripping of lobster oil.

And the food kept coming with a grilled Hungarian wild boar, buckwheat risotto, mushrooms, guancale sauce and cabbage juice. Finally a black current sorbet with peanuts, peanut butter, marscapone and cream. Cinnamon praline, hazelnut, cream and rum petit fours with coffee.

This feast would cost approximately 1,650 Krona ( £60 and £36 at the time of writing) and wine an extra 950 Krona (these prices were as of September 2022)

The wines came from Czech and Austrian border, Moravia, South Moravia, Naples and Piedmont.

A modern setting and an exquisite meal and you can’t go wrong!

Bistro Paulus

What do you get when you mix a Michelin star chef and a busy lunchtime canteen operated in a large commercial/office building? You get Bistro Paulus!

You get cutting edge food cooked by Chef Roman Paulus to either experience on site in the Envelope Office Centre building or take back to the office.

All of the dishes are cooked and plated in front of you and the menu, which changes regularly, is limited who the the kitchen can concentrate on quality not quantity.

There is a whole coffee and dessert station with cakes and puddings that not only looked delicious they were!

I had the daily special burger with chips/French fries and coleslaw (I am not always a fan of coleslaw because I don’t really like mayo but this was delicious).  The salad with cherry tomatoes, baby mozzarella and basil was as beautiful to look at as it was to eat. I didn’t have the gnocchi but one of my friends did and said it was really creamy and tasty.

Bistro Paulus is located at tr. Kosmonautu 1221/2a, Olomouc, 779 00

Bistro Helen

We ate lunch one afternoon at Bistro Helen located in the centre of a shopping mall – Galerie Santovka, Polska1, Olomouc 779 00.

Continuing the theme of open kitchen the Bistro Helen kitchen was no exception.  I love this idea of watching the theatre of food.  Everyone doing their own part to prepare a delicious experience for you and it does not disappoint.

The menu was written in Czech but with the help of our phones doing the translating we all managed to order plates of deliciousness!

I liked that there were jars of vegetables fermenting in the kitchen – something I am a big fan of!

Long Story Short Eatery and Bakery

The Long Story Short Eatery and Bakery, (Koželužská 945, 779 00 Olomouc) was just a few minutes walk away from our hotel as well as just tucked away from the centre of Olomouc.

When I told a friend we were going there for dinner he said it was the best meal he had eaten in all of the Central and South Moravian areas!  He was spot on!

For starters I had the ‘Small Plate’ consisting of their homemade bread, butter, pickled vegetables, spread and dried meats or selection. of cheese from the farm.  So many interesting and delicious flavours and the bread – well that was so fresh and delicious!

Main course was Veal Schnitzel with potato salad, cranberries and lemon.  The schnitzel was really tender and the potato salad a joy!  I really enjoyed this meal which was accompanied by a local Central Moravian red wine as smooth as velvet!

TVARG Brewery

Now for something a little different!  TVARG Brewery is a craft brewery making their crisp speciality beers as well as some artisanal seasonal brews.(Pivovar TVARG Pivovarská 899, 783 53 Velká Bystřice)

When we were visiting they had a pumpkin beer, not quite ready, but we tried it.  It was really delicious and different.  Unfortunately they didn’t have this bottled for us to take home – I know we all would have had a few bottles if we could!

Their beer is made with water from their own well and are unfiltered and unpasteurised.

They also produce an original cheese of Czech origin now only manufactured in two places in the Czech Republic.  This curd cheese, Tvargle, is pungent but makes delicious spreads and dips that pair really well with the beers. The cheese is cured in the unique conditions of the cellars.

We learned the perfect way to pour a beer in the Czech Republic.  They really like a large, foamy head on their beer unlike in Great Britain when we like less foam and more beer!

You can pop in for a visit to the pub to taste what’s available or take some home.  They offer tours and tastings if you are looking for something different to do with a group of friends.  One of their more unusual tastings is their pairing of beer with Jameson whisky! The whisky is a stout edition finished in craft beer barrels and pairs really well with their dark, moody but delicious porter.

Conclusion

We had a really fantastic time discovering the Olomouc area as guests of Centra Moravia and the Czech Republic.  The people were really friendly and loved that we were so exited to try all that the area had to offer.  The food was at times simple and other time really complex but what tied all the dishes together was a desire to showcase the wide variety of local, seasonal and innovative ideas.

I am looking forward to a return visit to discover the area further!
