Corfu – Three Amazing Beaches and A Boat Trip
Corfu is a Greek island just off the north western coast of mainland Greece. You can see the mainland from most places on the east of the island. You can also see the coast of Albania the closest border to northern Greece.
I was staying at The Courti Estate (about half an hour’s drive from the airport and Corfu Town) in the village of Moraitika. From the villa you could look down to the village and you would be about a 5-8 minute walk to the local beach which was lined with tavernas and bars.
However The Courti Estate arranged for us to visit a couple of out of the way beaches, beaches down long, unmade roads making you wonder if perhaps you might never arrive. When all of a sudden you were at a beach you would fall in love with immediately.
Halikouna Beach –
Before arriving at Halikouna Beach we stopped at nearby Alonaki Bay Taverna for a typical Greek maze lunch.
The lunch was absolutely delicious and many of the ingredients were grown by the owners themselves. I could have eaten plate after plate of the deep fried squid! The wine was their own too. It was difficult to leave but there was a beach calling our names!
Once we arrived at Halikounas Beach we found our spot on the busy beach. In the summer heat we were very happy to have the Tayo Beach Bar to serve us a great selection of cold drinks.
Settled on the beach under the huge straw sun umbrellas we were able to dry off from swimming in the warm, clear waters.
Arkoudillas Beach:
Setting off in our transport we had to change to 4 Wheel Drive vehicles for the last bumpy, pot holed track to take us down to the shore of Arkoudillas Beach. A few other cars were parked in the rustic car park but it was quiet. We set our things down on the few lounges provided and quickly got into the waters.
Bobbing around in the incredibly clear waters I know my thoughts quickly cleared and I didn’t have a care in the world.
We had sandwiches we had brought from The Courti Estate with us however there was a small kiosk on the beach with a selection of refreshments. I think this is a beach for locals and not many of them divulge its location!
Pazuzu At Glyfada Beach:
And the last beach we visited was Glyfada Beach which was a complete contrast certainly to Arkoudillas Beach.
We settled ourselves at Pazuzu (Mediterranean Cuisine) right on the beach. Rows of beach loungers set in twos with a canvas umbrella and table between them and with waiter service, always vigilant to see if you want a drink or snack while you soaked up the sun, sea and atmosphere.
Following our swimming session we had lunch in the Pazuzu restaurant. Sitting at a table in the shade, enjoying cold drinks and delicious food seemed a million miles away from home!
I just love having a Greek salad wherever I go in Greece and this one was delicious. The seafood spaghetti was divine and the white wine so crisp and refreshing.
It would be heavenly to sit in the shade of the restaurant, sipping crisp white wine and gaze out to the beautiful turquoise waters of the Ionian sea.
Other Beaches:
Each beach we visited had it’s own personal charm. Some were virtually deserted others full services with delicious food. Whichever beach you find yourself on in Corfu will charm you in a unique way.
Boat Trip:
We also took a private boat trip down the coast with Captain Homer. From the moment we boarded to getting back we were looked after like celebrities. The drinks flowed and the lunch was fresh and most of the ingredients came from Captain Homer and his wife’s own garden. The dark blue of the waters were beckoning us and Captain Homer would stop the boat at strategic points to let the group jump off into the deep water an enjoy the moment.
Time was the only reason we didn’t visit more beaches in Corfu but if you have time there are so many other beaches to explore – small out of the way or busy full of life.
