What is a travel story?

Travel Story = Where someone has been, what they have experienced, their special memories.

This year El Camino celebrate their 10th anniversary so to go with their campaign #MomentInTen I want to share with you my special #MomentInTen which is my first trip to the Caribbean island of Grenada.

What is a travel story that means a lot to me?

Ten days in Grenada that changed everything for me. My #MomentInTen.

On my first visit to the Caribbean island of Granada, I was introduced to a local school in a village of Vendome, 20 minutes away from the capital city of Saint Georges. The local school had a rule that all children must wear shoes and if they don’t have shoes they send them home. A lot of these children couldn’t afford shoes so my husband and I came home and started to collect shoes and books for the new library from my local community.

This was in 2015 and up until 2019, just before the pandemic we managed to send 12 barrels of shoes and books and general school supplies to the school. The children would open the barrels as if it were Christmas, as if we were giving them gold presents and in fact, they were secondhand shoes and secondhand, previously read books. It was so heartwarming and rewarding.

Also on our first trip we spent the lunchtime with the children.

As a food blogger I vowed that I would come back to that school and cook with the children. I asked what you would like me to cook and it was unanimous – pizza! There are two pizza places in the capital city of St George’s. Most of these children will never be able to afford to eat inside as they are priced for tourists  so the following year we returned, and then and for the next four years I went to cook with the children in the school.

I am a food blogger, a mother in a grandmother and teaching children to cook is one of the most rewarding ways to spend time.

Those first 10 days in Grenada changed my life, knowing that I was helping so many children to further their education and to have fun in the kitchen cooking. It was interesting to see the future leaders of Granada as they took over the pizza making, even telling me what to do next! We made enough for every child and the staff to have some. Everyone had a special memory to take away from that day!

How do you design your own travel memory?

First decide if you want a single or double bracelet and for me the hardest part was deciding the colour. I chose black for my first bracelet however I’m planning my next one already!

You can pick and choose your own steps which can include glass to represent the major oceans and seas as well as wooden steps to separate memories by country, city or even customised.

Home or Away?

Of course you don’t need to take a plane or boat to create travel memories. Try looking in your own backyard – my bracelet has a step for Home and London!

Who needs an El Camino Bracelet?

Everyone who travels or dreams of travelling!

Give an El Camino Bracelet for a Christmas present or how about a graduation present for someone about to take a year out to travel or even just about anyone you know!
